Service Credit Union Launches “Operation Backpack” to Support Military Children in Germany
Service Credit Union is proud to announce the successful launch of Operation Backpack, a new initiative designed to equip children of American military families stationed in Germany with the tools they need for academic success.
In its first year, Operation Backpack delivered 2,520 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students at 17 elementary schools and one intermediate school across U.S. military bases in Germany. Each bag included a glue stick, erasers, crayons, rulers, pens and pencils, ensuring that children have the basics they need to start the school year with confidence.
The program is modeled in-part after Pack a Pack¸ a New Hampshire-based initiative sponsored by the credit union. By bringing this effort overseas, where Service CU has 14 locations on U.S. military installations in Germany, the credit union continues its mission to give back to the communities it serves, especially families of servicemembers who give so much.
The schools receiving backpacks and supplies includes:

- Garmisch Elementary School
- Grafenwoehr Elementary School
- Netzaberg Elementary School
- Vilseck Elementary School
- Hohenfels Elementary School
- Smith Elementary School
- Kaiserslautern Elementary School
- Vogelweh Elementary School
- Sembach Elementary School
- Landstuhl Elementary School
- Ramstein Elementary and Intermediate Schools
- Patch Elementary School
- Robinson Barracks Elementary School
To bring this effort to life, Service Credit Union employees in Germany accepted deliveriesy of 105 boxes of backpacks and 53 boxes of supplies on August 19th before spending hours unpacking, organizing, and repacking the backpacks before distributing them to schools.
“Operation Backpack is about making sure military children feel supported as they begin their academic journeys,” said Tye Jacobson, Vice President of Overseas Operations. “Our team was proud to roll up their sleeves and play a hands-on role in preparing these bags, knowing that each one will make a difference in a child’s school experience.”
