Kingston, RI – Credit union volunteers from across Rhode Island came together at the University of Rhode Island on May 30 and 31 to support the 2026 Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games, continuing a tradition of service that has spanned nearly three decades.
Representing credit unions throughout the state, volunteers staffed the Track and Clerking events, helping coordinate competitions, assist athletes, and support medal ceremonies. Their efforts helped create a positive and memorable experience for hundreds of athletes participating in Rhode Island’s largest annual sporting event.
The Credit Unions of Rhode Island have partnered with Special Olympics Rhode Island for more than 29 years, providing both volunteer support and financial contributions to help ensure athletes can participate at no cost to themselves or their families.
“The 2026 Summer Games were nothing short of inspiring, and our incredible partners at the Credit Unions of Rhode Island once again rose to the occasion through both their time and generosity,” said Ed Pacheco, President & CEO of Special Olympics Rhode Island. “Each year credit union employees volunteer at our largest event, the annual Summer Games, helping to create life-changing experiences for Rhode Islanders with intellectual disabilities. Combined with their generous financial support, their volunteerism ensures that every athlete can participate at absolutely no cost to themselves or their families. Special Olympics Rhode Island is deeply grateful for the continued commitment and partnership of Rhode Island’s Credit Union community.”
Throughout the weekend, volunteers had the opportunity to interact directly with athletes, cheer them on during competition, and assist them as they received medals and recognition for their accomplishments. The experience reflects the credit union philosophy of people helping people and the volunteer slogan, “Give a Little, Gain a Lot.”
David Dupéré, President/CEO of Wave Federal Credit Union and Chair of the Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee, reflected on the impact of the event.
“The 2026 Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games was a deeply humbling celebration of inclusion, community and athletic brilliance Seeing the Torch ’Flame of Hope’ enter during the Opening Ceremonies for RI’s largest sporting event of the year set a tone for a day where these amazing athletes truly shine their brightest. It was an honor to stand alongside volunteers from our Credit Unions of Rhode Island as we worked together once again at the track clerking station, witnessing firsthand the incredible determination of the athletes and the profound impact of coming together to support this inspiring community.”
In addition to volunteering at the Summer Games, Rhode Island credit unions support Special Olympics Rhode Island throughout the year through fundraising initiatives, including golf and bowling tournaments, candy sales, and other charitable activities. These efforts help strengthen a longstanding partnership dedicated to expanding opportunities and promoting inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities across the state.
The Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee extends its appreciation to all credit union volunteers whose commitment and service helped make the 2026 Summer Games a success.
