Kingston, RI – More than 35 volunteers from Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA) member credits unions in Rhode Island came together to support the Special Olympics Rhode Island (SORI) Summer Games held at the University of Rhode Island. Their efforts helped ensure a successful and spirited event, which brought together athletes, families, and community supporters for a weekend filled with joy, achievement, and camaraderie.
Volunteers assisted across multiple roles, including clerking track events and escorting athletes to medal ceremonies. But more than logistics, the experience was defined by moments of connection—cheering athletes at the starting line, sharing in their excitement at the finish, and celebrating their victories with heartfelt encouragement.
Rhode Island credit unions have proudly supported Special Olympics Rhode Island for over 28 years, traditionally staffing the full track and clerking teams on the opening day of the Summer Games.
“Special Olympics Rhode Island’s Summer Games represent the culmination of a year of dedication, training, and hard work by our athletes. It’s their moment to shine—made possible by the unwavering support of volunteers and generous donors like the Credit Unions of Rhode Island,” said Ed Pacheco, President & CEO of Special Olympics Rhode Island. “Credit unions reflect the values of their members and the communities they serve. Year after year, they go above and beyond to support and uplift our athletes. We are proud to call them partners and honored to have them as part of the Special Olympics Rhode Island family.”
Volunteers represented Coastal1 Credit Union, Cranston Municipal Employees Credit Union, Greenwood Credit Union, Navigant Credit Union, People’s Credit Union, and Wave Federal Credit Union.
“The Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games was another incredible chapter in our long-standing partnership,” said David Dupéré, President/CEO of Wave Federal Credit Union and Chair of the RI Social Responsibility Committee. “Our years of participation reflect our deep commitment to inclusion, community, and compassion—and each year the joy we experience grows stronger. It was truly a day filled with heart, hope, and celebration.”
Ron McLean, President and CEO of the Cooperative Credit Union Association, added, “The commitment of Rhode Island’s credit unions to the Special Olympics is a powerful example of the credit union philosophy in action—people helping people. This partnership represents the very best of what it means to serve with purpose, and we are proud to stand with Special Olympics Rhode Island in building a more inclusive and supportive community.”
In addition to volunteering, the Credit Unions of Rhode Island raise financial support for Special Olympics Rhode Island throughout the year with golf and bowling tournaments, candy sales, and other fundraising activities. The CCUA’s Social Responsibility Committee extends its sincere thanks to all the credit union volunteers who helped make the 2025 Summer Games a memorable and meaningful experience.
