MetroWest Community FCU is honored to announce the 2024 Richard J. Callahan Memorial Scholarship winners. Mr. Callahan, a lifelong Framingham resident and Framingham State College alumni (a.k.a Framingham State University) served on the MetroWest Community Federal Credit Union Board for over 40 years. He strongly believed in giving back and caring for others, evidenced by his service to his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and to his community, as a veteran officer of the Framingham Police Force.

The Richard J. Callahan Scholarship awards college scholarships to high school seniors and continuing education students. After reviewing this year’s applications, the MetroWest financial scholarship committee together with family members of Richard J. Callahan selected Layla Reyes as the 2024 scholarship winner.
On Friday, August 9, 2024, Layla Reyes was handed a check for $1,000. She was accompanied by her mother. Layla attended Framingham High School where she was an outstanding student with a 3.9 GPA score.
Layla is passionate about climate and the effects of climate change and how it is a global issue that needs to be tackled by everyone. Littering is one of how humans harm the planet and In her junior year, Layla and a group of friends created the Keep Framingham Beautiful club that has actively made changes by organizing monthly clean-ups in and around the school campus. The club also collaborated with the Framingham Environmental Club and has brainstormed ways in which they can create small but impactful changes within their communities. To create awareness about the effects of littering on the planet, the Keep Framingham Beautiful Club launched a social media campaign where they exposed the damage and amount of trash that they found around the school.
Reyes and the club hope that posting the amount of trash that students litter on the school campus will hopefully encourage the students to dispose of their trash correctly. As she heads off to college this fall, Layla hopes to continue advocating for the importance of picking up after oneself and the dangers of climate change.
In the fall, Layla will attend George Wahington University where she will pursue her degree in psychology and later pursue psychiatry. MetroWest Community Federal Credit Union is proud to have Layla as our 2024 scholarship recipient and wishes her all the best at college and beyond.
