A Little Snow and a Whole Lot of Fun Make Heritage Family’s Shiver Me Shamrocks 5K Memorable While Raising Funds for Local Nonprofits

Despite a weather menu that included cold temps with a side of snow flurries, hundreds of runners and walkers of all ages braved the elements in Rutland on Saturday, March 14th wearing festive green attire, St. Patrick’s Day costumes, and their biggest smiles during the Shiver Me Shamrocks 5K, a high-spirited race benefitting local charities under the direction of the Heritage Family Cares 4 You Foundation.

“This year’s weather reminded us why the race is called Shiver Me Shamrocks,” said Heritage Family Credit Union Senior Vice President Ryan Butler. “Luckily, the success of this event has never been weather dependent. It’s always been about rolling with whatever seasonal surprises come our way as we celebrate the incredible spirit of the Rutland community, who turn out year after year to walk, run, and raise funds for inspiring local nonprofits.”

Prior to the start of the race, Butler presented a $5,000 check to the event’s primary beneficiary, Tatum’s Totes. This Rutland-based charity eases the transition of foster children to new homes by providing pajamas, blankets, stuffed animals, toys, and other items. Other local organizations will also receive donations from the Foundation.

Kids kicked off the race festivities with a Leprechaun Leap Fun Run outside of The Paramount Theatre on Center St., the same location where the 5K started and finished. The route took participants up Wales St. and Church St. before returning via Lincoln Ave., Williams St., and Church St. All along the way, families, friends, coworkers, and other participants were bathed in the warmth of a supportive soundtrack that mixed cheers with cowbell clangs.

Despite the weather, racegoers enjoyed a lively street carnival atmosphere on Center St. featuring a DJ and local vendors. After completing the 5K, participants enjoyed dozens of sweet treats donated by Jones Donuts as well as free beverages provided by Loose Luna, Nonna’s, Roots the Restaurant, The Speakeasy Café, and Taco Fresco.

Shiver Me Shamrocks was supported by several local businesses, with sponsorships provided by Rutland Regional Medical Center, The Royal Group, 802 Credit Union, and Community Health Rutland. Donated day-of giveaways included a restaurant gift card provided by the Karr Group and a horse trail ride from Mountain Top Inn.
