Using data and AI to deliver financial guidance when members need it most

For years, credit unions have made financial education part of the mission. We host seminars, publish articles, visit schools and give members tools to help them make better financial decisions.  All of that still matters. But today, we have an opportunity to make financial education much more personal, relevant and timely.

The difference is knowing when a member needs it.

Financial decisions happen in windows. Someone may be getting ready to buy a car, purchase a home, consolidate debt, send a child to college or prepare for retirement. With the data and AI driven insights available today, credit unions can increasingly recognize when those moments are happening.  Imagine knowing that a member may be getting ready to buy a vehicle and reaching them with information about affordability, interest costs, loan terms and preapproval before they make the decision.  That is more than marketing. That is helping a member make a better financial decision.

Gen Z is certainly part of this conversation. They are navigating credit, digital payments, student loans, investing apps and an incredible amount of financial advice coming at them through social media. They do not lack information. They need help determining what information to trust and what actually applies to them.

But this is much bigger than Gen Z.  Every generation has financial decision windows. Millennials may be balancing mortgages, childcare, debt and retirement savings. Gen X may be helping children financially while also caring for aging parents. Baby Boomers may be making decisions about retirement, downsizing or long term care.  We never really graduate from financial education. What we need to know simply changes.

That is where AI and data can become incredibly powerful. Patterns in transactions, deposits, balances and borrowing activity can help credit unions recognize when a member may be approaching an important financial decision.

Used thoughtfully, and with the trust and privacy our members expect, those insights give us the ability to deliver the right education at the right moment.  And I think that distinction matters.

If we use AI only to predict the next product a member might buy, we have simply created better marketing. If we use those same insights to understand what a member may need help with next, we create something much more valuable.

Credit unions already have the relationships, expertise and mission. Now we increasingly have the technology to recognize when members need us most. In an age of AI, financial education becomes more important, not less. The opportunity is to make sure that when a member reaches an important financial crossroads, their credit union is there to help them make the best decision possible.
