The Commercial Credit Portfolio Manager oversees the ongoing credit analysis, underwriting, annual reviews, financial monitoring, and risk management of Align Credit Union’s commercial loan portfolio. The role works closely with the Chief Lending Officer, AVP of Commercial Lending, Commercial Lending Generalist, Risk Department, and the Credit Union’s commercial CUSO, Octant.
Key responsibilities include monitoring borrower and portfolio performance, completing annual and pro forma analyses, identifying and escalating emerging credit risks, maintaining appropriate risk ratings, and ensuring effective credit administration.
The position underwrites commercial loan requests under $50,000 and coordinates with and reviews Octant’s underwriting for requests over $50,000.
The Commercial Credit Portfolio Manager also partners with the Chief Lending Officer to monitor the Credit Union’s commercial loan and credit card portfolios, including trends, concentrations, delinquencies, credit quality, losses, underwriting practices, exceptions, and emerging risks.
Responsibilities
- Manage the commercial annual review process, ensuring timely and accurate completion in accordance with Credit Union policy, regulatory expectations, and risk-based schedules. Review analyses completed internally or by Octant for accuracy, completeness, risk identification, and policy compliance.
- Perform and review comprehensive financial analyses, including financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, global cash flow, debt service coverage, liquidity, leverage, collateral position, and repayment capacity. Identify changes in borrower performance and emerging credit risks.
- Complete and review pro forma and projection analyses, evaluating assumptions, comparing projected results with historical and actual performance, and conducting sensitivity or stress analysis when appropriate.
- Monitor commercial portfolio performance, including borrower financials, covenant compliance, collateral coverage, delinquencies, concentrations, policy exceptions, past-due financial information, and other indicators of emerging credit risk.
- Track required borrower and guarantor documentation, including financial statements, tax returns, rent rolls, personal financial statements, insurance, appraisals, covenant reporting, and other required documentation.
- Review and recommend commercial loan risk ratings and monitor criticized, classified, watch-list, delinquent, and other higher-risk relationships. Work with the Chief Lending Officer, AVP of Commercial Lending, and Risk Department on enhanced monitoring and risk mitigation.
- Coordinate and review Octant underwriting for commercial loan requests over $50,000, ensuring required information is provided and underwriting recommendations align with Credit Union policy, risk appetite, and established standards.
- Underwrite commercial loan requests under $50,000, including financial, repayment capacity, collateral, guarantor, loan structure, and risk analysis, and prepare appropriate credit recommendations.
- Monitor commercial real estate collateral, including appraisals, evaluations, loan-to-value positions, property performance, rent rolls, occupancy, and other factors affecting collateral value and repayment capacity.
- Serve as a liaison between Commercial Lending and Risk Management, communicating portfolio performance, emerging risks, exceptions, risk-rating changes, concentrations, and other material credit concerns.
- Support the Chief Lending Officer in managing commercial loan and credit card portfolio risk, monitoring delinquency, losses, concentrations, credit quality, underwriting trends, exceptions, and other key risk indicators.
- Prepare clear portfolio risk reports for the Chief Lending Officer, Commercial Lending, Risk Management, Senior Management, and other appropriate stakeholders.
- Support Risk Management, internal and external audits, regulatory examinations, and independent loan reviews by preparing documentation, analyzing portfolios, responding to findings, and tracking corrective actions.
- Collaborate with Commercial Lending, Risk, Octant, Loan Operations, Finance, and other departments to maintain strong underwriting, credit administration, risk controls, regulatory compliance, and portfolio quality.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Occasional travel to borrower locations, commercial properties, meetings, or other Credit Union locations may be required.
Compensation: The expected base pay range for this role is $67,100 to $85,000 annually. Compensation may vary based on relevant experience, skills, competencies, and certifications.
Requirements/Skills Needed
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial credit analysis, underwriting, portfolio management, risk management, or related lending preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of commercial underwriting, financial statement and tax return analysis, cash flow, global cash flow, debt service coverage, and pro forma analysis.
- Strong understanding of commercial credit risk, risk ratings, collateral analysis, covenant monitoring, concentrations, portfolio trends, delinquencies, and credit quality.
- Ability to independently underwrite commercial credit requests and effectively review underwriting prepared by third-party or CUSO partners.
- Ability to analyze borrower and portfolio data, identify emerging trends and financial deterioration, and recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate credit and portfolio risks.
- Ability to manage multiple underwriting requests, annual reviews, financial reporting requirements, and portfolio-monitoring deadlines independently.
