CCUA Election 2024 Update: Historic Wins and Legislative Outlook

The Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA) is pleased to announce that all candidates supported by the Association’s advocacy PAC, ACUPAC, achieved victory in yesterday’s elections. This success solidifies the CCUA’s continued influence and partnership with both federal and state legislators in Washington, D.C., and across our states. We look forward to collaborating with these leaders on critical issues affecting credit unions, including tax status, credit card interchange reform, and legislation aimed at reducing fraud.

The re-election of President Donald Trump signals potential shifts in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s directorship and the National Credit Union Administration’s leadership. These changes may significantly affect regulatory priorities for credit unions and the broader financial services sector.

Election Highlights by State

Delaware
Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester made history by winning the Senate seat in Delaware, becoming the state’s first woman and first person of color in this role. Earlier this year, Dover Federal Credit Union hosted a CCUA meeting with Congresswoman Blunt Rochester, reinforcing our endorsement of her re-election and her commitment to credit union interests.

State Senator Sarah McBride won Delaware’s at-large Congressional seat, having demonstrated her dedication to credit unions during meetings with CCUA, including a recent visit to Priority Plus Federal Credit Union.

Massachusetts
The Massachusetts delegation, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, who secured another six-year term, saw comprehensive re-election victories. If the Democrats take control of the House, several Massachusetts representatives stand poised for influential leadership positions.

New Hampshire
Congressional District 2 candidate Maggie Goodlander, a vocal advocate for credit union priorities, achieved victory, marking a significant win for CCUA and America’s Credit Union. Goodlander’s recent pre-election meeting with CCUA underscored her alignment on key issues like fraud prevention, interchange, and maintaining credit union tax status.

Kelly Ayotte emerged as the new governor, winning 53% of the vote. As governor, Ayotte will appoint key regulatory positions, including the Banking Department Commissioner, and will play a critical role in state legislative approvals. CCUA looks forward to working closely with Governor-elect Ayotte.

Rhode Island
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse won re-election, reinforcing his strong engagement with Rhode Island credit unions, as demonstrated during his recent housing bill announcement. Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo also secured their seats, with Rep. Magaziner notably advocating for credit unions on the House floor in the past session. CCUA values the productive discussions held with both representatives during our fall caucus.

Finally, The CCUA is still awaiting final results in select state races and will provide updates as information becomes available.
