Beverly Credit Union is pleased to announce that CEO Tom Hankard has returned to work after nearly five months of medical leave.
In March, Hankard suffered a spinal fracture which resulted in paralysis. Following spinal decompression surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, three months of intensive inpatient treatment at Spaulding Rehabilitation in Boston, and continued outpatient physical therapy, he has made a remarkable recovery.
“I spent my five-year work anniversary in a hospital bed unable to move, now I return to the credit union back on my own two feet,” Hankard said with a smile. “My recovery has been challenging, but one thing I never had to worry about was work. Thanks to our succession plan, and an incredible team, our members continued to receive the same exceptional service every day.”
During Hankard's absence, Chief Financial Officer Benjamin Sette oversaw the credit union's day-to-day operations while the staff stepped up to support one another and ensure uninterrupted member service.
“I couldn't be more grateful to Ben, the team, our Board of Directors, our members, and everyone who reached out with prayers and encouragement,” Hankard said. “Their support meant more than they know, and I'm excited to be back serving our members.”
As he returns to work, Hankard also looks forward to resuming his community involvement. He is a member of the Greater Beverly Chamber of Commerce; Beverly Main Streets; recently became Chair of The Salvation Army of the North Shore Advisory Board; is Past District Governor of Rotary District 7930; and serves on the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Credit Union Association representing the needs of smaller asset sized credit unions throughout the Northeast.
“It’s been quite humbling,” Hankard added. “I'm thankful for the outstanding care I received, the unwavering support from so many, and the opportunity to return to doing what I love.”
