What is a Credit Union?

A credit union is basically banking without the corporate middleman. Think of a credit union as having main character energy but for your money.

You and the other members own it, which means the goal isn’t squeezing profits out of members, its helping people manage their money better.

Credit unions offer the same things banks do, checking accounts, debit cards, car loans, credit cards, savings accounts, online banking services, but they operate differently behind the scenes. Because they’re not-for-profit, the goal isn’t to make money off you. The goal is to help members do better financially.

Instead of answering investors or shareholders, credit unions answer their members, which means you. When you join, you’re not just opening an account; you’re becoming a part-owner of the organization.

What’s in it For You?

A lot of people feel like the financial system wasn’t built for them. Credit unions were literally built by and for regular people.

Here’s what makes them different:

  • You’re not the product.
Big banks are owned by investors trying to make money. Credit unions are owned by the people who use them, so the focus is helping members, not maximizing profits.
  • Your money stays local.
Credit unions reinvest money into the community, helping local people buy cars, start businesses, or buy their first homes.
  • You actually get a say.
Every member gets one vote in electing the board of directors, no matter how much money is in their account.
  • Fewer fees and bigger bang for your buck.
Credit unions charge lower fees and offer better interest rates on loans and savings.
  • They’re just as safe.
Credit union deposits are insured by the National Credit Union Association, which works similarly to FDIC insurance at banks.
