2018 Social Responsibility Honoree
I’d like to nominate Westerly Community Credit Union to be awarded the Social Responsibility Award.
Working at WCCU over the last 20 years, I can attest that we truly care about our members, as well as the communities we serve. Our mantra is ‘WCCU Cares’ and that is a focus point in all we do as an organization. As part of this ‘WCCU Cares’ initiative, we annually provide financial support to over 140 organizations in our communities. In 2017, totals reached $145,000.
In addition, our staff and board, also known as #TeamWCCU, actively volunteer, serve as members of Boards and Committees, and hold fundraisers. We chair local walks: Relay for Life, Heart Walk,, and Alzheimer’s, as well as hold staff dress down days monthly to help raise funds for our local organizations. Many of our staff volunteer at Special Olympic events on behalf of WCCU and to represent CCUA. They are also active members of the CCUA Social Responsibility Committee.
Volunteering also extends to local schools, where WCCU staff volunteer to teach credit, small business/entrepreneurial classes, and Marketing. They also help conduct mock interviews with local students and teach them the importance of dressing for success.
In the 2016.17 school year, we launched a new “WCCU Teacher Grant Program”, which awards $7,500 in grants up to $500 to teachers and administration from (5) local public school districts. These funds are awarded to help educators fund creative learning projects outside of the normal curriculum. To date we have awarded over $12,630 to 40 recipients and look forward to this program continuing to grow.
I’m proud to be a part of this organization and all we strive to accomplish. We may not be the largest credit union in Rhode Island, but we are always committed, company-wide, to making a big impact for our members and our communities.
