CCUA’s Credit Unions of Rhode Island Raise $85,000 for Special Olympics Rhode Island at Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Rehoboth, MA – Credit unions and business partners from across Rhode Island came together on Monday, July 14, for a picture-perfect day on the greens at the annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island. Held at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, the event raised $27,000—bringing the total for the fundraising season to an impressive $85,000.

Hosted by the Credit Unions of Rhode Island, the tournament drew dozens of golfers and supporters for a day of friendly competition, networking, and celebration—all in support of Special Olympics Rhode Island’s mission to empower athletes with intellectual disabilities through sports.

“The commitment of Rhode Island’s credit unions to Special Olympics continues to be a shining example of what our industry stands for—compassion, community, and impact,” said Ron McLean, President and CEO of the CCUA. “Raising over $1.6 million to date, reflects a legacy of giving that has transformed lives. We were also proud to recognize Michael Lucca for more than two decades of remarkable service. His spirit and dedication truly embody the values we celebrate through this partnership.”

This year’s tournament was especially meaningful as two longtime champions of the cause were honored. Donna Gregson, retiring after more than 40 years of service to Coastal1 Credit Union and Special Olympics Rhode Island, was recognized for her unwavering commitment. Michael Lucca, a Special Olympics Rhode Island athlete, employee, and beloved ambassador to the Credit Unions of Rhode Island for over 20 years, was presented with a Lifetime Ambassador Medal for his outstanding volunteer service.

Dupéré, President and CEO of Wave Federal Credit Union and Chair of the RI Social Responsibility Committee. “Honoring Special Olympics athlete Michael Lucca with a Lifetime Ambassador Medal was a tribute to his unwavering commitment, infectious spirit, and the lasting impact he has made on our credit union community. Together, we're building stronger communities through inclusion, service, and compassion.”

The day ended with laughter and camaraderie on the patio, overlooking the course, as trophies were awarded. Congratulations to this year’s winners from Ocean State Credit Union: Mike Garvey, Mike Freeman, Peter Sullivan, and Paul Raida.
