Special Olympics Rhode Island

Through a variety of events and activities, the Credit Unions of Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee provides a vehicle through which the credit unions can combine resources to address the needs of more than 4,000 children and adults with intellectual disabitities who participate in Special Olympics Rhode Island.

For more than 20 years, Credit Unions of Rhode Island have sponsored a variety of successful fundraising events including annual golf and bowling tournaments for Special Olympics Rhode Island. In addition, the credit unions send a large contingent to the Special Olympics RI Summer Games, held at the University of Rhode Island. At the event, credit union volunteers help to organize athletes that are competing in track events. The volunteers always remark that they feel it was a privilege to participate in the event.

The reason for the lasting success of the relationship between the Credit Unions of Rhode Island and Special Olympics Rhode Island is a shared commitment to service. The mission statement of Special Olympics Rhode Island clearly states that commitment:

"The mission of Special Olympics Rhode Island is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community."
