Cooperatives around the world operate according to the same set of core principles and values, adopted by the International Cooperative Alliance. Cooperatives trace the roots of these principles to the first modern cooperative founded in Rochdale, England in 1844. These principles are a key reason that America’s credit unions, financial cooperatives, operate differently from other banks and other financial institutions, putting the needs of their members first.

July 6, 2019, marked the 97th International Cooperative Day, celebrated on the first Saturday of July since 1923. Since 1995, the International Cooperative Alliance, together with the United Nations, has been setting the theme for the celebration of #CoopsDay through the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC), a multi-stakeholder partnership of global public and private institutions that champions and supports people-centered and self-sustaining cooperative enterprises as leaders in sustainable development.
