CCUA Webinar: Back to Business - Loan Participations: Opportunities for Credit Unions During and After the Covid 19 Pandemic - May 28, 2020

Loan Participations: Myths and Opportunities for Credit Unions

Not too long ago, most credit unions thought of loan participations as something other financial institutions did.  In some cases, the barriers to being involved with loan purchases or sales were regulatory in nature.  For others, the concerns were more risk based.

Today, through the deployment of technology, loan participation activity has increased across the credit union landscape.  Many have found balance sheet and loan portfolio management strategies playout through loan sales and purchases.  Many of these same institutions have found technology to be an integral part of managing risk and limiting the costs involved in buying and selling.  Small credit unions with excess liquidity are purchasing from larger institutions with high loan volumes, putting this excess capacity to work and producing a win for both the buyer and seller.  Institutions of all sizes are learning that the sale of one type of asset off their balance sheet can get much needed diversification when replaced with a dissimilar asset purchased from a peer.

Learn about Loan Participations: Myths and Opportunities for Credit Unions and how you may be able to benefit from this growing and important tool.

The program will cover key definitions; follow the path a loan pool takes before it gets to market; the perspective of buyers and sellers when evaluating pricing of a pool; accounting for purchase and sale of a share of a pool of loans; and what happens once the purchase and sale has been confirmed.
