Rhode Island Legislative Advocacy
The Association is an active advocate for credit unions. In order to be successful in that role, it must gather information, construct compelling and coherent arguments, organize support, communicate effectively, and be persistent before the Rhode Island General Assembly.
Each year there are numerous legislative filings that are of importance to the credit union community in Rhode Island. Some are filings designed to help credit unions serve their members better, and some are broad based bills that have an effect on all sectors of the financial services industry. The Association closely monitors all of these proposals and, when appropriate, advocates for the credit union position in every forum.

Many proposals impact the operation of credit unions, the role of credit unions as an employer, and the rights of members as consumers. There are a variety of useful resources on this site including an overview of the legislative process, links to the General Laws of Rhode Island, text of pending bills, and lists of lawmakers along with contact information.
2020 Legislative Session
The Association closely monitors and tracks state legislation on behalf of members. Retained Association Lobbyist Richard Beretta, Jr., Adler, Pollock & Sheehan, P.C, reports weekly as practicable. Your thoughts are welcome as to the impact of proposed legislation on your credit union as well as recommended positions for the Association to advocate on these bills. Please forward any thoughts, comments or suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
State Advocacy Day
The annual Rhode Island Governmental Affairs Day reception takes place as each new legislative session is underway to position credit unions to be top of mind with the General Assembly as their deliberations begin. The event, declared "Credit Union Day" in the Ocean State by the Governor, provides an opportunity to celebrate and thank elected officials for their continued commitment to credit unions, their members and their communities.
It also provides an excellent opportunity for the credit union community and the leaders of state government to meet and discuss our shared goal of enhancing the financial well-being of the people of Rhode Island. Cordial networking and discussions continue following formal presentations and briefings on key issues.
