Public Policy and Race

Under the policy and race program, the Council is reviewing the link between public policy development/recommendations and race. The Council will also advocate for an inclusive and diverse approach to public policy development, especially as it relates to an urban agenda.

The Council will illustrate how many public policy decisions are race-driven, which leads to a further separation by race and ethnicity. Furthermore, the Council will demonstrate (and advocate) the need for inclusive and diverse public policy development—inviting all voices to be heard.

The Council will review four areas as examples of “race-based” public policy:

  Immigration
  Housing
  Employment (Affirmative Action)
  Education

Presently, the Council is reviewing immigration public policy and its impact on race relations. Traditionally, when the discussion of race emerges, automatically we think of the black-white conflict. But the Council believes, while tensions will continue to exist between blacks and whites, the emerging battle is between African-Americans and Latinos. It’s paramount that these two groups work together and advocate for equity and opportunity as opposed to fighting one another for the trivial title of “top minority group.” The Council (and its programs) will address the tensions and help facilitate a dialogue between the two groups and develop recommendations for moving forward.
