Crime, Justice and Public Safety--Youth Crime and Juvenile Justice

Under its crime and justice program, the Council is reviewing and examining juvenile justice policy issues and what measures can (and should) be taken to improve current policies that will lead to long-term success for youth.

The Council also hopes its initiative will narrow the gap between community needs and concerns (about youth crime and the juvenile justice system) and the legislative agendas in both Springfield, Illinois and Washington, DC.

Project Goals

To provide the public (particularly neighborhoods) and policy-makers with accurate information and research about juvenile justice/youth crime issues.
To advocate for juvenile justice policy recommendations that lead to long-term success for youth and communities.

Project Objectives

Educate the news media about the complex nature of youth crime issues.
Encourage policy-makers to develop juvenile justice policy recommendations that reflect community needs and concerns.

The Council has launched a public education initiative to surface and review critical juvenile justice policy issues. The Council’s program will also facilitate a debate/dialogue about what measures can (and should) be taken to improve current policies that will lead to long-term success for youth. The Council has convened a juvenile justice advisory committee to direct this program.

The Council is reviewing a number of policy concerns related to juvenile justice, such as judicial reform, the disparity of service for minority youth, abuse and its impact on juvenile delinquency, and punishment versus treatment. The Council will also review the increased rate at which young girls are entering the criminal justice system, and examine how the juvenile justice system treats young women and girls.
