Extra News story—Hip-Hop Schools CPS Students

Lu Bailey, the Council’s president, recently announced the new partnership with CPS that ultimately will include 18 high schools. “The Council is pleased to partner with Chicago Public Schools in this series of hip-hop workshops designed to help youth use school-based culture and principles of education to think critically about hip-hop music and popular culture. The workshops will provide a framework for students to examine their perceptions about the value of education,” said Bailey.

Can Workshops Make Kids More Critical of Rap?

May 21, 2007.

Council President Lucretia “Lu” Bailey was interviewed on
May 17, 2006 by Steve Edwards, host of Eight Forty-Eight, regarding the
new survey from the Chicago Council on Urban Affairs on how young males see themselves and the impact of hip-hop in their lives. Council President Lu Bailey discussed the importance of teaching hip-hop literacy to young men.

Council President Appeared on Mo Caradine Show

On April 4, 2006, Council President Lu Bailey appeared on the popular Mo Caradine Show (Chicago Cable Channel 25), also known as “Mo Talks,” to review and discuss a recent article published in the New York Times about the plight of African American men.

Lu addressed the following questions:

Does America care about the future of black men?
Why are the numbers of poor, under-educated black men growing?
Are black boys being steered into the juvenile and criminal justice system?
Can the problems that black men face be overcome?

The Council’s President Interviewed on WBEZ
Regarding Youth Crime Survey
(Chicago Affiliate of National Public Radio)

Council President Lucretia “Lu” Bailey was interviewed on
September 5, 2002 by Steve Edwards, host of Eight Forty-Eight.
Ms. Bailey spoke about the results of the Council’s community-driven youth crime survey, which was conducted in two Chicago communities. The survey results will be used to reduce youth crime and reform Chicago’s Juvenile Court—the first and oldest court in the world.
