Centennial Commemoration

At the Council’s 4th Annual Boat Cruise, the topic was youth crime and reform of the Juvenile Court.

Close to 150 people listened as special guest speakers Bernardine Dohrn, director, and supervising attorney Steven Drizin—both from Northwestern University’s Children and Family Justice Center—discussed the significance of the centennial of the Cook County Juvenile Court. In addition, Dohrn and Drizin focused on the juvenile justice system and its impact on children, stressing that youth need to be reached before they enter the court system.

The Council Goes Hi-Tech

Thanks to a grant from IBM Corporation, underwriting support from Survey Center, L.L.C., and the assistance of web site designers Jim and Nicki Puente, the Council officially went online in 1999. Our web site address is www.ccua.org. To date, more than 50,000 people have visited our web site! And, we have plans to expand our site to link with all our community, business, and civic partners.

Please feel free to browse our web site and give us your feedback—we hope to hear from you soon!

The Council Goes Disco?

Back to the 70's!Over the years, the Council has run the gamut regarding spring fundraisers. We have done everything from the Best of Chicago Auction to a swanky event at a posh custom-made jewelry gallery and studio. But by far, the wackiest (and most fun) event was the “Back to the 70’s” fundraiser. What’s the connection? Well, the Council started in the 1970s...so, there’s the hook. As you can judge from this picture, many of us are glad the 70’s are over.

Council President Receives Recognition

Also pictured (left to right) is Sheila A. Penrose, recipient of the YWCA’s lifetime achievement award; Audrey Peeples, retiring CEO of the YWCA; and the incoming CEO Judy Diamond. Lu’s award is a likeness sculpture of Sojourner Truth.

Council President Lucretia “Lu” Bailey was selected by the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago as the 2000 recipient of the Leader Award For Racial Justice. This award recognizes outstanding and notable achievements in the area of racial justice, exemplary service to the community, and a willingness to take leadership positions on issues that have an impact on women’s lives.

Lu and other award recipients were honored at the 29th Annual Leader Luncheon Awards, one of the Chicago area’s most prestigious salutes to working women. Today, almost three decades later, the list of more than 180 honorees reads like a “Who’s Who” of career women. It gives the Council great pride to know that Lu’s name has been added to that list of esteemed women.

The Council Says Good-Bye to Joe Dragonette and G.H. Wang

This past year, we had to say good-bye to Council Director, civic leader, and public relations pioneer, Joe Dragonette.

Joe Dragonette
Joe Dragonette
April 17, 1936–
February 18, 2000

Dragonette joined the Council’s board in 1988 and was instrumental in reshaping the Council’s marketing strategy. He served on the Council’s marketing and membership committee and was a faithful supporter of the Council’s mission and programs. Dragonette, a member of the President’s Council on Employment of People With Disabilities, also helped the Council develop a special issue of One City that highlighted the Americans With Disabilities Act. Dragonette was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis nearly 25 years ago.

Dragonette was an executive with Daniel J. Edelman Public Relations in the 1970s and later went on to start his own agency, GCI Dragonette.

We also lost another good friend and faithful supporter when we bid farewell to Gung Hsing Wang, or as he was simply known to his friends, “G.H.” Mr. Wang accomplished a great deal in his nine decades, serving as a scholar, diplomat, inventor, author, successful businessman, and civic leader.

G.H. sat on the Board of Advisors at the Council beginning in 1991 and had been an active member and strong supporter of the organization.
